What the Exam Tests
Reading feeds two of the paper's six question types: 选词填空, choosing the word that fits a blank in a sentence or short passage, and 阅读理解, questions on academic passages about the main idea, details, inferences, the meaning of a word in context, what a pronoun refers to, the role of a sentence and the writer's attitude. The 理科 stream's texts come from mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing, with experiments and data charts; the 文科 stream's from literature, philosophy, law, education, history and the arts.
In our 80-question mock papers 阅读理解 gets 24 questions and 选词填空 16, the two largest shares. The CSCA publishes the topics but not how many questions each gets, so this split is our own reading of the syllabus. With 90 minutes for 80 questions you have just over a minute each, so read the question first, then the passage.
Three Reading Speeds
A first-year textbook page or a 400–600 character academic passage cannot be read word by word under time pressure. Strong readers switch between three speeds:
- 略读 (lüèdú, skimming) — a fast pass for the topic and the shape of the argument.
- 寻读 (xúndú, scanning) — hunting for one specific item: a number, a name, a term.
- 精读 (jīngdú, close reading) — slow, careful reading of the one or two sentences that hold the answer.
The humanities syllabus names 寻读 and 略读 directly and asks candidates to 准确提取关键词 (guānjiàncí, key words). The Chinese title names 略读 and 精读, the English title skimming and scanning; all three belong together: you skim for the shape, scan (寻读) to find the spot, then read that spot closely (精读).
Step 1 — Skim the Skeleton
Read the first sentence of every paragraph (the 主题句, zhǔtíjù, topic sentence) and the last sentence of the passage. Slow down only at signal words, which show where the argument turns:
| Signal | Words | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| order | 首先 · 其次 · 此外 · 最后 | a list of points |
| turn | 但是 · 然而 · 不过 · 事实上 | the author's real point |
| result | 因此 · 所以 · 由此可见 · 总之 | the conclusion |
| example | 例如 · 比如 · 以……为例 | support you can skip on a first pass |
| evidence | 研究表明 · 数据显示 · 调查发现 | facts that detail questions like to test |
Skim this opening and notice how much the bold words alone tell you:
“城市热岛效应是指城市气温明显高于周边郊区的现象。其形成原因主要有三个方面:一是沥青和混凝土吸收大量热量,二是绿地和水面较少,三是汽车与空调排放废热。因此,增加城市绿化被认为是缓解热岛效应的有效途径。”
From three signals you already know the topic (热岛效应, rèdǎo xiàoyìng, urban heat island), the structure (definition → three causes → solution) and the conclusion. Vocabulary such as 沥青 (lìqīng, asphalt) and 混凝土 (hùnníngtǔ, concrete) can wait until a question needs it.
Step 2 — Read the Stems, Pick Anchor Words
Before reading in detail, glance at the question stems and choose one anchor per question — the most distinctive word in it. Good anchors are numbers, years, names, terms in quotation marks and technical nouns. Poor anchors are general words such as 问题, 发展 or 影响, which appear everywhere.
Step 3 — Scan for the Anchor
Chinese has no spaces, so scan for the shape of what you want: Arabic numerals, 《》 titles, “ ” quotations, a rare character. Expect paraphrase: a stem asking for 原因 (cause) may be answered by 由于, 是因为 or 归因于 in the text; a stem with 作用 may match 有助于 or 能够.
Step 4 — Read Closely Around It
Read the anchor sentence plus one sentence before and one after. With a long sentence, strip the modifiers and find the core:
“由于大量的沥青路面和混凝土建筑在白天吸收并储存了太阳辐射的热量,城区夜间的气温往往明显高于周边的郊区。”
Core: 城区夜间的气温高于郊区 (the city is warmer at night). Cause: 由于……吸收并储存了热量. Most phrases ending in 的 before a noun (大量的, 太阳辐射的, 周边的) are description you can drop on a first reading, but keep the ones that limit time, place or degree, such as 夜间的 here: a detail option can be wrong just because it changes “at night” to “all day”. 辐射 (fúshè) means radiation.
Matching Speed to Question Type
- 主旨 (main idea) — skimming is usually enough; confirm with the last paragraph.
- 细节 (detail) — scan for the anchor, then read closely.
- 词义 · 指代 (word meaning, reference) — close reading of the words just around the target.
- 态度 · 作用 (attitude, function) — skim for evaluative words and for where the part sits in the structure.
Key takeaway: Skim (略读) the topic sentences and signal words to learn the topic and structure, scan (寻读) for an anchor word from each question, then read closely (精读) the sentence it sits in plus one on each side.
Worked Example 1
Example 1 — skimming for the main idea
Reasoning: Skim the frame: sentence 1 introduces the term, 所谓……是指 defines it, 以……为例 marks the coffee as an example, and 因此 leads to its practical use. A is only the example, C is one detail from the last sentence, and D is never discussed.
Answer: B
Worked Example 2
Example 2 — scanning numbers
Reasoning: Scan for the numbers and read each one with its verb. 上升到了27% means “rose to 27%”, not “rose by 27%”, so A is wrong; 下降了5个百分点 (bǎifēndiǎn, percentage points) means “fell by 5 points”, not “to 5%”, so B is wrong. D contradicts 早上7点到9点. C paraphrases 从地铁站到工作单位.
Answer: C
Worked Example 3
Example 3 — close reading of one long sentence
研究人员指出,虽然增加城市绿地面积能在一定程度上缓解热岛效应,但如果绿地分布过于集中,其降温作用就很难覆盖到距离较远的居民区。
研究人员认为,绿地的降温效果受到限制的原因是:
A. 城市绿地的总面积太小
B. 绿地分布过于集中
C. 居民区的建筑过于密集
D. 热岛效应根本无法缓解
Reasoning: The sentence is built on 虽然……但…… and 如果……就……. The part after 但 carries the point: the cooling effect fails to reach distant housing if green space is too concentrated. A turns 增加面积 into a complaint the text does not make, C is not mentioned, and D contradicts 一定程度上缓解 (huǎnjiě, ease).
Answer: B
Exam tip: Look at the question stems before the passage and underline one anchor word per question — a number, a name or a term — so your first reading already has targets.
Exam tip: When you find an anchor, read one sentence before and one after it. The answer often sits in the next sentence, especially after 但是, 然而 or 因此.
Exam tip: During skimming, mark unknown words and keep going. Return to one only if a question asks about it.
Common mistake: Reading word by word from the first line: you spend your time on examples the questions never use. Skim the skeleton first.
Common mistake: Scanning only for the exact words of the stem: the passage may use a synonym, such as 由于 or 归因于 for a stem that asks about 原因.
Common mistake: Stopping at the first match: a sentence that begins with your anchor may be reversed by 但是 halfway through. Always finish the sentence.
Try This Yourself
一篇关于城市垃圾分类的文章共四段,各段首句如下:
① 垃圾分类是城市可持续发展的重要一环。
② 从国际经验看,一些国家的分类体系已相当成熟。
③ 然而,在不少城市,分类政策推行得并不顺利。
④ 要改变这种状况,关键在于完善配套设施并加强宣传教育。
题目问:“城市推行垃圾分类遇到困难的原因是什么?”应该先精读哪一段?
